Method One

Measure an Existing Ring

The most reliable at-home method is to measure a ring that already fits the intended finger. Choose a ring that fits comfortably and sits on the same finger and hand where the new ring will be worn.

Measuring the inside diameter of a ring
  1. Place the ring on a flat surface.
  2. Measure the internal diameter from one inner edge to the opposite inner edge.
  3. Measure in millimeters for best accuracy.
  4. Compare the internal diameter with the chart below.
Measure only the inside opening of the ring. Do not include the metal thickness.

Method Two

Measure with String, Paper, or a Soft Tape

You can also measure your finger using a thin strip of paper, a soft measuring tape, or a piece of non-stretch string.

Measuring ring size with paper or string
  1. Wrap the paper or string around the base of your finger.
  2. Make sure it feels comfortable and can pass over the knuckle.
  3. Mark where the strip overlaps.
  4. Measure the length in millimeters. This is the finger circumference.
  5. Compare the circumference with the chart below.
Do not pull too tightly. A ring should feel secure, but not restrictive.

General Guidance

Average Ring Sizes

Average ring sizes can help when you are planning a gift or proposal, but they should only be used as a starting point.

  • Average women’s ring sizes are commonly around US 6 to 7.
  • Average men’s ring sizes are commonly around US 9 to 10.
  • Finger shape, knuckle size, ring width, climate, and daily comfort can all affect fit.
For engagement rings and bespoke orders, confirming the exact size is always recommended before production.

How to Secretly Find a Ring Size

If you are planning a surprise, there are discreet ways to estimate the correct ring size.

  • Borrow a ring they already wear on the correct finger and measure the inside diameter.
  • Ask a close friend or family member if they know the size.
  • Compare one of their rings against a printed guide if available.
  • Choose a design with resizing flexibility when the size is uncertain.
Avoid guessing for eternity rings or complex designs, because some styles cannot be resized safely.

Comfort & Wearability

Fit Tips

  • Measure your finger at the end of the day, when fingers are usually slightly larger.
  • Avoid measuring when your hands are very cold, as fingers may be smaller.
  • Wider bands usually feel tighter than slim bands and may require a slightly larger size.
  • Engagement rings should feel secure but still slide over the knuckle with light resistance.
  • If you are between sizes, consider the ring width, finger shape, and daily comfort.

After-Sales Care

Resizing Guidance

Some rings may be eligible for resizing depending on the design, metal type, stone setting, band structure, and requested adjustment. Rings with continuous stones, eternity settings, detailed shoulders, or complex structures may not be safely resizable.

  • Plain bands and many solitaire rings are generally easier to resize.
  • Full eternity rings usually cannot be resized.
  • Half eternity and pavé designs may have limited resizing options.
  • Engraved, bespoke, or personalized rings may have special service conditions.
For final eligibility, please contact FID Royal Jewelry before arranging resizing or production.

Common Questions

Ring Size FAQs

What is the most accurate way to measure my ring size?

The most accurate option is to use a physical ring sizer or be measured by a professional jeweler. At home, measuring an existing ring that fits well is usually more reliable than measuring with string.

Should I size up for a wider band?

Often, yes. Wider bands can feel tighter than slim bands, so some customers prefer a slightly larger size.

Can all rings be resized?

No. Full eternity rings, some pavé designs, complex settings, and heavily detailed bands may not be safely resizable.

What if I am between two sizes?

The best choice depends on ring width, finger shape, knuckle size, and comfort preference. Contact us before ordering if you are unsure.
