Diamond Carat Weight Explained: Carat, Size and Total Carat Weight
Carat is the first number most people look at, and the one most often misunderstood. It does not tell you how wide a diamond is, and on earrings and bracelets it usually does not describe a single stone at all.
Quick Answer
One carat is 0.2 grams. Carat measures weight. How large a diamond looks depends on its weight, its shape and how it is cut. On pieces with more than one stone, the figure shown is normally the total carat weight of all the diamonds together.
Carat Is Weight, Not Size
Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look different in size. A stone cut too deep hides weight below the surface where you cannot see it. A well-proportioned stone shows its weight across the top. That is one reason cut quality matters as much as carat.
Approximate Size of a Round Diamond
| Carat weight | Approximate diameter |
|---|---|
| 0.25 ct | 4.1 mm |
| 0.50 ct | 5.1 mm |
| 0.75 ct | 5.8 mm |
| 1.00 ct | 6.4 mm |
| 1.50 ct | 7.4 mm |
| 2.00 ct | 8.1 mm |
| 3.00 ct | 9.3 mm |
These are typical figures for a well-cut round brilliant. Individual stones vary slightly. Notice that doubling the carat weight does not double the width: a 2.00 ct round is only about a quarter wider than a 1.00 ct.
Shape Changes How Big a Diamond Looks
Elongated shapes such as oval, marquise, pear and emerald cut spread their weight along the finger, so they often look larger than a round of the same carat weight. Our guide to choosing a diamond shape covers each one.
What Does Total Carat Weight (TCW) Mean?
Total carat weight is the combined weight of every diamond in a piece. It is written as TCW, CTW or "ct. tw."
- Stud earrings: the figure is normally for the pair. A 1.00 ct pair is usually two stones of about 0.50 ct each.
- Tennis bracelets: the figure is all the stones added together. A 3.00 ct bracelet may hold dozens of small diamonds.
- Halo and side-stone rings: the figure may include the centre stone and the smaller stones around it.
This is why a 1.00 ct solitaire ring and a 1.00 ct total weight halo ring are very different pieces. Always check whether the carat figure is for the centre stone or the total, and ask if the product page does not make it clear.
How to Choose a Carat Weight
- Start with how it will be worn. Everyday studs and a once-a-year statement piece call for different sizes.
- Think in millimetres. Use the table above and compare with a ruler. It is more reliable than imagining a number.
- Do not trade cut for carat. A slightly smaller, well-cut diamond usually looks brighter and better than a larger, poorly cut one.
- Consider the hand or the ear. The same stone looks larger on a slim finger or a small earlobe.
- Read the grading report. It records the exact weight and measurements. See what diamond certification means.
Carat and Lab-Grown Diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds are graded for carat weight in exactly the same way as mined diamonds. Because they generally cost less per carat, many buyers find they can choose a larger stone or a better cut within the same budget.
Frequently Asked Questions

No. Weight is fixed at 0.2 grams, but the visible size depends on shape and cut proportions.
Is carat the same as karat?
No. Carat measures diamond weight. Karat measures gold purity. See gold karats explained.
Does TCW on earrings mean each earring?
Usually it means the pair together. Check the product description to be sure.
What carat weight is best for an engagement ring?
